"Case 39" centers on an idealistic social worker who saves an abused 10-year-old girl from her parents only to discover that the girl is not as innocent as she thinks.
It may not be to this film's advantage that it has been in production forever (mid-2006) and that since then, several movies featuring creepy/evil kids have come out. And so, labelling Case 39 as derivative is probably unfair.
But still, it's difficult to fin anything fresh or griping in this story, which we have seen a thousand times. Every trope and tricks of the genre since The Omen is included here, none of it is done particularly well. Even Renée Zellweger, usually at ease in any role she has played, is barely convincing. Maybe Zellweger is outside of her comfort zone in that genre. Jodelle Ferland who plays young Lilith is more convincing and probably the single most entertaining aspect of the film.
The direction here by Alvart is poor at best. Did this film really have the $27M budget listed in IMDb? If so, i suppose a large part of it was wasted on Zellweger as the look, feel and sets are crappy and feel like something you'd expect from a TV movie.
